Rabat – Renewable energy development company CWP Global is set to accelerate Morocco’s green energy transition with the launch of two major green hydrogen projects, beginning with the AMUN project, which will deploy 15 GW of wind and solar in Morocco.
In a press release announcing the launch of the project, CWP Global stated that it had carried out two years of research and prospecting in the southern provinces of Morocco.
CWP Global’s founder and CEO Mark Crandall visited Morocco in December 2022 to meet with the company’s local team.
“The team has been conducting technical surveys of the country’s solar and wind resources since 2019 and has started taking the necessary steps to launch the first project, AMUN (15GW) in the Region of Guelmim-Oued Noun,” detailed the press release.

According to the statement, Crandall also met with Moroccan economic and industrial actors to discuss a second project.
During his visit, Crandall emphasized Morocco’s great potential for green hydrogen production and export, arguing that “it could capture between 5 and 10% of the global green hydrogen market.”
He also highlighted that Morocco will host large-scale projects, particularly in the southern provinces.
AMUN Project
According to the Ammonia Energy Association, the AMUN project will be located near Tan Tan in Morocco, about 100 kilometers along the coast and 20 to 30 kilometers inland.
The project will reportedly be implemented in three distinct phases. The first two stages include the installation of 3 GW of solar and 3 GW of wind energy as well as the production of 2 to 2.5 million tonnes of ammonia annually. The third phase is still in its early stages.
CWP Global seeks to establish local training facilities that are suited to the needs of the project and the local environment to scale up the use of hydrogen generated from renewable energy.
As part of this project, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University is set to have a renewable ammonia demonstration and training plant. The plant is expected to provide engineering students with hands-on experience before moving on to large-scale ammonia synthesis, reported the Ammonia Energy Association.
The initiative comes as Morocco continues to invest in upgrading its already advanced renewable energy infrastructure.
Morocco’s Research Institute for Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN) launched the first micro-pilot green hydrogen production system in September.
The pilot project consists of a 20kW electrolyzer and photovoltaic (PV) solar panels.
