Rabat – Morocco’s National Institute of Geophysics (ING) has announced that a 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit off Al Hoceima’s province earlier today.
The tremor took place at 09h12 min 29 sec (GMT+1), the ING reported, noting its epicenter was located in Nekkour, a small town and rural commune in Al Hoceima Province.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 21km at a latitude of 34.996 North and a longitude of 3.817 West.
Every year, several earthquakes strike Morocco’s northern region. The province of Al Hoceima in particular experienced at least four earthquakes in a single week in 2021.
Morocco’s National Institute of Geophysics reported that the four earthquakes recorded magnitudes between 3.8 and 4.7 degrees on the Richter scale.
The epicenter of the four tremors were located off the coast of Driouch province.
In 2004, a devastating natural disaster struck Al Hoceima province. The earthquake had far-reaching consequences, costing the country millions of dirhams to restore normalcy to the region.
It claimed the lives of about 631, injured nearly 1000 people, and destroyed over 1000 houses.
