Rabat – A recent report by American magazine US News indicated that Morocco is the leading African country in the quality of life index for the year 2023.
With a quality of life score of 12.7/100 and an $8,144 GDP per capita, Morocco came out on top of the continent’s ranking, and 52nd spot worldwide.
The ranking is based on nine quality-of-life attributes that measure aspects of the country including the state of the job market, affordability, economic and political stability, and safety, among others.
Morocco received a 48.8 score in affordability, a 24.4 score in the family-friendly attribute, and 12.6 in the safety index.
Meanwhile, the North African country received a 10.5 score in job market quality, a 10.4 score in political stability, and a 7.5 score in economic stability.
However, Morocco received lower scores in the well-developed public education system scoring 3, well-developed public health system scoring 4.4, and in income equality indexes with a 5.5 score.
Even though Morocco is leading the African continent, the country’s scores are significantly low compared to international standards.

On the continental level, Morocco came ahead of Egypt as it scored 10.7, and South Africa with 8.4 respectively.
Meanwhile, Tunisia came in the fourth spot with a score of 6.5, followed by Ghana (6.1), Kenya (3.9), and Cameroon (3.6) respectively.
At the bottom of the ranking was Zambia, which has a 2.9 quality of life score, followed by Algeria with a 1.9 score.
On the international scale, Sweden led the global ranking as the country with the best quality of life scoring 100, followed by Denmark (99.9) and Canada (97.9) respectively.
The quality of life ranking features a total of 85 countries worldwide, only nine of which are African. The system measures against “intangible” criteria “beyond essential ideas of broad access to food, housing, quality education, health care, and employment,” the report noted.
