Rabat – Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf died at the age of 79 today in Dubai.
The politician died in a hospital after a long battle with an illness.
Musharraf was admitted to a hospital in the Gulf country in 2022 after complications from amyloidosis.
The former Pakistani president led Pakistan between 2001 and 2008. He seized power in a coup in 1999.
Musharraf left for Dubai where he has lived in exile since 2016.
The military’s media issued a press release, conveying their senior military personnel’s condolences to Musharraf’s family.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also offered his condolences to the family of the former president.
“May the departed soul rest in peace,” he said.
According to reports, Musharraf served several assassination attempts.
In 2008, Musharraf resigned as president and was forced to exile. He also planned to return to power in 2013, but failed after he was disqualified from running in an election.
Three years after his departure to Dubai, a court sentenced him in absentia for “treason” related to his decision to impose emergency rule in 2007.
However, a court later nullified the ruling against him.
