Rabat – King Mohammed VI addressed a message to participants at the high-level conference on the protection of the city of Al-Quds on Sunday.
The event, which opened today in Cairo, Egypt at the Arab League headquarters, aims to discuss the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict amid Israel’s troops’ human rights violations against Palestinians.
In the King’s message read by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, the monarch reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment towards the Palestinian cause and the question of Al-Quds.
Stressing the significance of the status of Jerusalem and its importance for all religions, the monarch emphasized that Morocco is “attached to it as to our first national cause and we set up its protection as we have underlined it on various occasions, as an intangible principle of our foreign policy.”
The King also acknowledged that the conference is being held amid challenges and a difficult context due to violations that aim to “erase the singularity of its [Jerusalem’s] civilizational stamp” and to “alter its legal status.”
Palestine has been witnessing violent attacks and provocative actions from Israeli troops and officials.
In addition to the killings of Palestinians, one of the recent provocative moves that sparked outrage is the storming of Al Aqsa Mosque by Israel’s far-right Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.
The controversial visit sparked uproar among the international community, with many Arab countries stressing that the provocative visit challenged the holy site’s status quo.
In his today’s message, King Mohammed VI reiterated that systematic actions carried out with “great disregard for international law and United Nations resolutions, do not make it possible to establish a climate of confidence and they undermine the very possibility of reaching a lasting settlement based on the existence of two states living side by side in peace and security.”
The monarch stressed that “extremists on both sides are taking advantage of the breakdown” in the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, noting that this causes persistent blockage of the peace process to end the conflict.
Emphasizing the nature of the conflict as a “political issue,” the monarch reaffirmed Morocco’s continued support for the peace process and cited the efforts made by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Committee to contribute to helping Palestinians with aid and support.
Some of the initiatives the agency carried out include the implementation of over 200 projects at an estimated cost of $65 million.
“Provided 100% by Morocco under the ‘state donations,’ the financing of these activities is covered by approximately 70% of donations from institutions and individuals,” the monarch said.
King Mohammed VI stressed that Morocco has been insisting on the importance of Arab and Islamic efforts to increase their involvement in supporting Al-Quds.
“It is a question of moving towards an unblocking of the political situation, likely to open up prospects for the future imbued with optimism and conducive to peace, security and prosperity in the region,” the King said.
The monarch concluded his message by reiterating Morocco’s full support for the Palestinian authority led by President Mahmoud Abbas, confirming Rabat’s support for all efforts to support the ambitions of Palestinians who seek freedom and independence unity, and prosperity.
