Rabat -The US ambassador to Morocco Puneet Talwar joined a delegation of 17 representatives from top Silicon Valley companies to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the TechWomen program at a ceremony held in Casablanca’s TechnoPark on February 28.

The ceremony highlighted Morocco and US’ support for women who work in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The ambassador announced that: “Science and technology present a golden opportunity for women to contribute to economic growth, innovation, and prosperity in both Morocco and the United States, and throughout the world.”

The ambassador said that the program [TechWomen ] provides mentorship and networking as well as professional development, stating that the resource has been “invaluable for women in tech.”

From mentorship and networking to professional development, this program has been an invaluable resource for women in tech and reflects the shared U.S.-Morocco commitment to encouraging more women to work in STEM fields. 3/3#TechWomen #InclusiveSTEM #She_Is_A_Scientist pic.twitter.com/4awpAWIrvO

The visiting delegation included five TechWomen alumnae from Cameroon, South Africa, Tunisia, Kyrgyzstan, and Lebanon. During their time in Morocco, the delegates will participate in outreach events that aim to encourage more girls to pursue STEM careers.

Additionally, each delegation member served as a mentor for the TechWomen program. They work for a range of top US companies, including Twitter and Lucasfilm.

The event was part of Morocco’s recently launched campaign #She_Is_A_Scientist, which aims to celebrate the achievements of talented Moroccan women and girls in the STEM field.

The “Girlz for Impact Days” initiative will take place across Morocco between March 8 and 20, as a “core component” of the #She_Is_A_Scientist campaign.

TechWomen, funded by the US Department of State, connects the next generation of women leaders in STEM from Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East with mentorship and exchange partners in the United States, providing them the access and opportunity to advance their careers and inspire women and girls in their communities.

Since its launch in 2011, nearly 70 Moroccan women have participated in the program alongside more than 1,000 participants and alumnae from around the world.

TechWomen has led to the creation of other initiatives, including eSTEM Morocco, a seed-granted TechWomen impact initiative founded in 2014 that strives to give Moroccan girls and women with tools to pursue careers in STEM.
