Rabat – Astronomer Hicham Aissaoui predicted that the first day of Ramadan in Morocco this year will be next Thursday March 23.
The astronomer also believes that Moroccans will fast for 30 days this month instead of 29 days. For the past five years, Ramadan has lasted 29 days.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East are expected to fast for 29 days only.
Astronomy calculations differ from one expert to another. Ramadan’s official start day is determined by crescent moon sightings.
Morocco is expected to sight the crescent moon for the month of Ramadan next week on Wednesday. Other countries, like Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Egypt, among others are expected to announce the results of the crescent moon sighting on Tuesday.
Some astronomers believe that the majority of Arab countries are expected to celebrate the first day of Ramadan next Thursday.
Eid Al Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, however, will differ from one country to another.
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar when Muslims abstain from drinking and eating from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days depending on the crescent moon sighting.
