Mohammed is the Most Popular Baby Name in Berlin

Rabat – Mohammed ranked as the most popular name for baby boys in Berlin in 2022, according to a report by German news outlet Tagesspiegel.

The name has surpassed Noah, which was the top pick for parents in the previous year, and Adam, which holds the third position in the latest ranking.

Sophia is the most popular girl baby name, followed by Emilia and Emma.

The German outlet highlighted that Mohammed was the most popular boys’ name in Berlin in 2018, 2019, and 2020, only falling to third place in 2021.

The report is based on data collected by the Society for the German Language (GfdS), an association for the popularization and research of the German language.

The association compiled name lists from over 750 registry offices across the country, which submitted nearly one million name entries.

The name’s growing popularity can be attributed to a variety of factors, including the city’s increasing diversity, the increase in the number of families with Islamic backgrounds, and the name’s cultural and religious significance as the name of the Prophet in Islam.

Mohammed, however, is a popular first name for boys not just in Berlin but all over the world. In the UK, Mohammed was the most popular baby name for five consecutive years from 2016 to 2021.

In 2019, the name ranked among the ten most popular names for boys in the US.
