Rabat – Morocco’s women’s national football team has climbed one spot in FIFA’s latest ranking, now standing at 72nd place. The team’s impressive performances have also earned them the title of the seventh-best team in Africa.
On a global scale, the United States continues to lead the rankings, followed by Germany in second place, Sweden in third, England in fourth, and France in fifth.
The Atlas Lionesses gained recognition for their eye-catching displays during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Although they reached the final, South Africa ultimately claimed the title.
Nevertheless, Morocco’s national team showcased their talent and determination throughout the tournament, securing a spot at this summer’s 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Looking ahead, the Atlas Lionesses have three friendly matches scheduled for this month. The first match will take place on July 1 against Italy, followed by another friendly against Switzerland on July 5. The third and final friendly game will be held on July 16 against Jamaica.
These matches are crucial in preparing the team for the upcoming tournament.
Earlier this year, FIFA dedicated an article to the Atlas Lionesses titled “Success coming naturally for Atlas Lionesses,” recognizing the rapid development of women’s football in Morocco.
The article highlighted the potential of the Atlas Lionesses, suggesting that they may soon make their mark on the global stage.
Referring to the success of Morocco’s men’s team in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, FIFA stated, “Walid Regragui and his men have taken Moroccan football to the next level. It is now the turn of the Atlas Lionesses to take Morocco to the pinnacle of the women’s game.”
Additionally, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has included three Moroccan players in its “best eleven” for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak, Fatima Tagnaout, and Zineb Redouani were recognized for their exceptional skills and outstanding performances during the tournament, earning them a place in the team of the tournament.
