Marrakech – King Mohammed VI has sent a heartfelt message of gratitude to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, in recognition of the invaluable assistance his country provided following the devastating earthquake that struck the central Moroccan province of Al Haouz on September 8.

Following the catastrophic earthquake, which claimed the lives of over 2,900 people and left more than 5,500 injured, the United Kingdom promptly dispatched a search and rescue team to assist in the relief efforts. The Moroccan people were deeply moved by this act of humanitarian solidarity.

In his message, King Mohammed VI expressed his appreciation for the noble and compassionate attitude of the British government at this difficult time.  Expressing his gratitude on behalf of the Moroccan people, the monarch underlined the profound impact of the UK’s support in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The Sovereign paid tribute to the efficient and effective efforts of the UK International Search and Rescue Team, which played a pivotal role in the search and rescue operations in the earthquake-hit areas. The team’s dedication and professionalism were instrumental in bringing relief and comfort to the earthquake victims and their families.

King Mohammed VI underlined that the UK’s rapid response and generous assistance is a clear example of the enduring friendship, fruitful cooperation, and unwavering solidarity between Morocco and the United Kingdom. He stressed that both nations and their peoples remain committed to the values of solidarity, empathy, and mutual assistance, which were vividly demonstrated through this collaborative relief effort.

The earthquake in the Al Haouz region was a tragic event that shook Morocco. In the face of this disaster, international support, including from the United Kingdom, has been vital in helping the affected communities rebuild their lives and recover from the devastation.
