Paris – Muslim leaders from Turkey, Iran, and Qatar voiced strongly condemned Quran burnings and related desecrations in European countries during their addresses at the United Nations General Assembly.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced what he called “intolerable” attacks against Islam in various European nations, accusing populist politicians of fanning the flames of racism and Islamophobia. He emphasized that these acts darken Europe’s future and criticized the leniency shown towards Kurdish activists in some European borders, which has fueled tensions between Turkey and Sweden.
An Iraqi refugee, Salwan Momika, triggered international outrage by burning and trampling on the Quran in front of Stockholm’s largest mosque on Eid al-Adha, a significant Muslim holiday. This act led to strong condemnation by the Swedish government, defending free speech but emphasizing the importance of responsible expression. In his UN speech, Erdogan highlighted the rise of Islamophobia in Europe and linked it to the resurgence of far-right nationalism, reinforcing his call to counter such discriminatory actions.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, a representative of the Shia theocratic state, held up a Quran at the UN podium and emphasized that disrespect towards the holy book would not diminish its divine truth. He accused the West of employing freedom of speech as a tool to divert attention from fundamental issues. Raisi condemned the discriminatory actions evident in Western countries, from Quran desecration to the ban on the hijab in schools, stating that they did not uphold human dignity.
The Prince of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, emphasized the sanctity of the Quran and urged against compromising the sanctity of others under the guise of freedom of expression. He urged Muslims not to be provoked by acts aimed at desecrating the Quran, highlighting its sacred nature.
The Muslim leaders collectively condemned Quran burnings and related actions, appealing for respect, understanding, and the protection of religious sanctity on an international platform.
