Rabat – Abdellatif Hammouchi, the General Director of Morocco’s National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), met today with the general director of French national police Frederic Veaux to discuss opportunities for increasing security cooperation between their two countries.
According to an official statement from the DGSN, the meeting took place in Morocco as Veaux visited the North African country to hold a series of meetings with senior Moroccan officials and convey France’s willingness to boost cooperation with Rabat.
In its statement, the DGSN said that the two officials notably discussed exchange of expertise in the security field as well as mechanisms to implement joint operations as part of their bilateral partnership.
In particular, they spoke of taking their cooperation to the next level by working closely to ensure security during the coming Olympic Games, which will take place in Paris next year.
Morocco has a rich history of efficient approach to security threats, and this has made the country a widely applauded and reliable partner for many countries in the face of emerging security challenges.
Over the years, Morocco has assisted many countries in tackling security threats, including terrorism-related crimes and other transnational criminal activities.
Last year, Morocco assisted Qatar in maintaining security throughout the FIFA World Cup.

Prior to the kickoff of arguably the world’s most prestigious football tournament, the Gulf country had expressed interest in benefiting from Morocco’s expertise in the field of security to ensure the success of the global showpiece.
In line with this successful Moroccan-Qatari security cooperation, Hammouchi and Veaux agreed to prepare for a similar visit by Hammouchi to Paris in the near future. The visit’s main goal will be to strengthen the areas of bilateral security cooperation while diversifying the levels of partnership to serve the interest of the two countries, noted the DGSN statement.
During their meeting today, Hammouchi and Veaux discussed several issues of common interest as well as ways of boosting bilateral cooperation in security to tackle challenges related to drug trafficking, irregular migration, terrorism, and cyber crimes.

The DGSN statement concluded by stressing that the meeting was also part of the series of dialogue and meetings that Hamouchi usually holds with international partners as part of Morocco’s approach to strengthening multinational cooperation against security threats.
In addition to Veaux, some reports also indicated that the French Minister of Agriculture is expected to visit Morocco on December 13.
It remains to be seen whether similar visits by French officials to Morocco will help clear the fog of uncertainty created by the unsettled diplomatic tensions between Paris and Rabat.
Over the past months and years, France has provoked anger and frustration in Morocco owing to its ambiguous stance on the Western Sahara dispute and its apparent readiness to sponsor hostile media and political campaigns against the North African country whenever it takes an assertive stance on a wide range of strategic issues.
