Ahead of the much anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco’s national football team will play a friendly game against Gambia on January 7.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announced the news, without providing specific details about the time and place of the match.
The statement said that the game is part of the national team’s preparatory campaign for AFCON, which will kick off on January 13 in Cote d’Ivoire.
Starting on January 1, the national team will also enter a closed preparatory camp at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maamoura before traveling to Cote d’Ivoire.
Morocco is part of Group F alongside Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia.
On Thursday, Head coach of the Moroccan national team Walid Regragui announced the list of the 27 players selected to take part in the continental competition.
The list includes several familiar names who took part in the historic run of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar including Yassine Bounou, Munir Mohamedi El Kajoui, Achraf Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui, and Romain Saiss.
Regragui said that his team is looking to fully embrace the advantage of going to the competition as favorites.
“Being underdogs at the World Cup and a favorite at the CAN is an asset. We have acquired a new status not only in Africa but also at the global level, with a place in the top 15,” he said.
Morocco ended the year as the 13th-best football team in the world, according to the latest FIFA rankings.
The country is the best-ranked African team on the list, ahead of Egypt, Senegal, and Tunisia.
