Rabat – Morocco’s Football Federation (FRMF) has stated that it will appeal the “unjust” suspension against head coach Walid Regragui.
The head coach was fined and received a four-match suspension, including the suspended penalty of a two-match ban.
The statement by FRMF explained that the unjust nature is evident as “the facts have shown that Mr. Walid Regragui did not engage in any behavior that goes against the spirit of sportsmanship.”
The Atlas Lions’ head coach Walid Regragui faces a four-match suspension from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for his involvement in a heated exchange with DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba on Sunday.
The exchange ensued when the Atlas Lions’ head coach approached the Congolese captain to shake hands with him following the game.
Regragui told the French sports outlet L’Equipe that the player had been avoiding eye contact as if he did not want to shake hands with the Moroccan coach.
“I held his hand, and he started screaming as is evident in pictures and the widely circulated videos,” Regragui said, strongly denying claims that he made racist comments in his altercation with the Congolese player.
Converging reports have stated the suspension might affect Regragui’s ability to attend Morocco’s game against Zambia tonight.
The AFCON match will take place at 9 p.m. Moroccan time at Laurent Pokou Stadium in Cote d’Ivoire, and will be livestreamed on beIn Sports.
