Rabat – In a recent meeting dedicated to reviewing elections held in Africa from July to December 2023 and discussing prospects for 2024, the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) commended Morocco for its commitment to enhancing the capabilities of African electoral observers.

The PSC expressed satisfaction and called for continued support in a statement released after the meeting.

In particular, the African Union’s permanent decision-making body in charge of conflict prevention, management and resolution acknowledged Morocco’s significant contribution to programs aimed at bolstering the capacities of electoral observers on the continent.

“The AU commends the Kingdom of Morocco for facilitating programs to strengthen the capacities of African electoral observers and calls for the continuation of this programmatic support to the AU Commission,” the statement read.

In addition, the PSC urged member states to intensify efforts in enhancing the institutional capacities of national bodies responsible for election management and the judiciary.

This call included the allocation of adequate resources to ensure the independence and professionalism of these institutions.

The council’s declaration underscored the need for timely support to member states, emphasizing the relevance of strengthened collaboration with national electoral observer groups.

The objective is to encourage initiatives that enable more effective observation of electoral processes while adhering to international, continental, and regional standards, as well as national legal frameworks.

Meanwhile, the AU body lauded Morocco’s facilitation of electoral observer training programs for contributing to the overall improvement of the electoral process across the continent.

The PSC’s recognition adds weight to the importance of such initiatives in fostering transparent, free, and fair elections in Africa.

As the PSC encourages other member states to follow Morocco’s lead, the emphasis on timely and adequate support to election management bodies aligns with the broader goal of upholding democratic principles and ensuring electoral processes in line with international standards.
