Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology said today that heavy rainfall and snowfall will continue in several Moroccan provinces until Wednesday.
The weather alert also forecasts strong wind and dust storms, affecting several areas nationwide.
Heavy rainfall between 20 to 40 milimeters is expected on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m in Chefchaouen, Tetouan, Al Hoceima, Larache, Ouezzane, El Hajeb, Fez, Moulay Yacoub, Taza, Taounate, and Meknes.
The same weather will affect Sidi Slimane, Sidi Kacem, Khemisset, and Khenifra.
Snowfall between 15 to 40 centimeters will affect the provinces of Al Haouz, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Khenifra, Midelt, Sefrou, Taza, Ifrane, Boulemane, Tnghir, and Ouarzazate from Tuesday morning until Wednesday.
Strong wind and dust storms will continue today until 11 p.m. in Oujda Angad, Guercif, Jerada, Figuig, Taourirt, Nador, Bouelmane, Zagora, Midelt, Errachidia, Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Tata.
The recent rainfall is a positive change for Morocco, which has been facing the worst drought in the past six years.
Last week, the African Development Bank (AfDB) expressed concerns about water stress in Morocco.
“Morocco’s situation is symptomatic of growing freshwater shortage heightened by population growth,” the bank wrote , noting that this situation threatens all sectors, “from services to agriculture and industry to tourism.”
The bank also detailed that a Moroccan citizen consumes on average over 600 m3 a year, or one-quarter of what is consumed in less than six years.
