Rabat – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has criticized what he deemed as double standards in the EU’s swift imposition of sanctions against Tehran following its recent attack on Israel.

Amirabdollahian took to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday to denounce the EU’s decision, asserting that it reflects a bias favoring the interests of what he described as the “criminal Israeli regime.”

“It is regrettable to see the EU deciding quickly to apply more unlawful restrictions against Iran just because Iran exercised its right to self-defence in the face of Israel’s reckless aggression,” the statement added.

Amirabdollahian’s statement comes in the wake of Iran’s first-ever direct assault on Israel earlier in the month, during which more than 300 drones and missiles were launched.

Iran’s attack was a retaliation for a bombing that targeted Tehran’s consulate in Damascus on April 1, resulting in the deaths of seven senior Iranian commanders and military personnel.

Israel is widely believed to have been behind the attack though it has not claimed responsibility for it.

Iran’s Foreign Minister further highlighted Iran’s frustration with the lack of action against Israel’s atrocities, particularly concerning the ongoing bloody war against Palestinians in Gaza.

“It is also regrettable that while the Israeli regime continues its genocide against the Palestinians through different war crimes, missile attacks & famine, the EU’s reaction to such crimes is almost nothing more than hollow words,” the statement added.

Iran’s Foreign Minister asserted that the EU’s alignment with the US stance on Iran only serves to perpetuate injustice and undermine the country’s right to self-defense.

Instead, he urged the EU to redirect its focus towards sanctioning Israel, arguing that the Israeli regime’s actions warrant international condemnation and punitive measures.

“The EU must act responsibly and sanction the Israeli regime,” he concluded.
