Rabat – During his remarks at the opening ceremony of GITEX Africa Morocco, President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Companies (CGEM), Chakib Alj, stressed the importance of AI’s potential to Africa’s economic transformation.
Attending the largest tech and startup show in Africa, Alj said that AI’s potential resides in its capacity to produce solutions to the specific challenges of the continent.
He emphasized that promoting Africa’s technological prowess is essential for industrialization, economic growth, and job creation in Africa – a continent whose population is set to double by 2050.
Speaking on GITEX Africa, Alj stressed that this edition presents “Excellent opportunities for Africa both economically and socially.
Discussing the strengths of high tech and their potential in promoting the socio-economic environment, Alj cited fintech, describing its role as “crucial” in financial inclusion and access to payment services for a still underbanked population.
Alj also highlighted the essential role of telemedicine and mobile health applications, whose “adoption can bridge gaps in access and quality of healthcare.”
The president of CGEM further touched upon the importance of using technology in agriculture, emphasizing that his use offers the best solutions to ensure Africa’s food security.
The development of these sectors requires strong public-private partnerships as well as open innovation and better access to markets, he added.
Director General of the Digital Development Agency (ADD), Mohamed Drissi Melyani, also commented on GITEX Africa’s importance, describing it as an international hub that reflects Morocco’s commitment to further promoting digital culture to foster an integrated and sustainable national economy.
“This edition unveils the latest technological innovations inherent in digital transition in a world experiencing accelerated changes, and explores the opportunities offered by digital solutions,” he said.
He added that the event is also part of Morocco’s efforts to strengthen South-South cooperation in all areas.
Trixie LohMirmand, CEO of KAOUN International, also stressed the importance of the event, while extending her gratitude to Morocco and Africa for the “trust they have placed in us.”
For LohMirmand, GITEX Africa’s scope extends beyond the continent with the participation of 130 countries from around the world.
KAOUN International is the global affiliate of the Dubai World Trade Center, which also organizes GITEX Global in the UAE.
