Rabat – Slovakia, buoyed by a stunning upset win over Belgium, will face Ukraine in a crucial Group E encounter at the Dusseldorf Arena today, aiming to solidify their position at the top of the table.
Despite entering the tournament as the lowest-ranked team in the group, Slovakia shocked the footballing world with a narrow 1-0 victory over the star-studded Belgian side.
However, their quest for a deep run at the tournament will be tested, as they only managed to win their first match at Euro 2020 before crashing out in the group stage.
A win against Ukraine would not only extend their lead in Group E but also guarantee them a spot in the knockout stages as at least one of the best third-placed teams.
Moreover, they could secure a top-two finish if they triumph and Belgium falter against Romania on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Euro 2024 campaign got off to a disappointing start with a heavy 3-0 defeat to Romania.
This loss puts immense pressure on manager Serhiy Rebrov, who is facing his first major tournament as a coach.
Ukraine will be looking to replicate their performance in Euro 2020, where they secured a crucial 2-1 victory over North Macedonia on Matchday 2.
Historically, they have enjoyed success against Slovakia, avoiding defeat in seven of their last eight meetings. However, their most recent encounter in the UEFA Nations League saw a convincing 4-1 loss for the Blue and Yellow.
A defeat for Ukraine would leave them needing a win against Belgium and potentially relying on a favorable outcome in other groups to qualify for the knockout stages.
