Rabat – Twenty six people have been affected by a new food poisoning incident, this time taking place in Lahraouyine, a small town in the Casablanca-Settat region.
The Sidi Othman regional hospital in Casablanca received the patients at 11 p.m. local time.
SNRTNews said that the incident took place at a celebration, presumed to be a wedding, according to reports and social media posts.
The victims of the food poisoning cases reported to have consumed chicken pastilla, a renowned traditional dish in Morocco’s cuisine.
Sidi Othman’s hospital’s director, Said Benaasli, confirmed the news, adding that the victims experienced varying degrees of food poisoning.
As of now, 17 individuals are reported to be in stable condition, while nine others are still receiving treatment.
The director told SNRTNews that a 3-year-old child is among those affected, having been transferred to another hospital for specialized care.
Additionally, another patient has been moved to the emergency room.
Morocco has witnessed several food poisoning cases recently.
One of the fatal cases took place in May in Marrakech, where at least six victims died.
The owner of the fast food restaurant, called colloquially in Morocco a “snack,” received a prison sentence of four years for involuntary manslaughter and negligence. The same penalty was imposed on the two assistants working for the owner.
Earlier this month, another food poisoning incident made local headlines after 20 people were rushed to local hospitals in Martil, northern Morocco, including children.
