King Mohammed VI has thanked President Emmanuel Macron for France’s decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
In a letter to Macron, the King expressed his satisfaction with France’s “strong and clear position.”
“I am particularly pleased with the clear and strong position adopted by France, in Your Message, on the Moroccan Sahara issue,” the King said.
The monarch further expressed his appreciation to France for its resolute support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only basis to achieve a lasting solution to the Sahara dispute.
“By recognizing Morocco’s legal titles and immemorial rights, France contributes to strengthening the international momentum that many countries are already supporting and thus putting an end to a conflict inherited from another era,” he said.
King Mohammed VI also recalled France’s determination to defend Morocco’s territorial integrity both at national and international levels, noting that the two countries would work together to reach a solution that fully respects the country’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
“The Moroccan people and its vital forces are fully aware of the importance of this decision,” the King noted, adding that he would be happy to receive Macron within the framework of a State visit.
The dates of the visit will be determined through diplomatic channels, the king’s letter concluded.
On Tuesday, France announced a bombshell announcement in support of Morocco’s position on the Sahara dispute.
A statement from the royal cabinet of Morocco said Macron conveyed his country’s decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
In the message, Macron stressed that “the present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”
He also stressed that his country will support the autonomy initiative as a definitive framework for resolving the territorial dispute.
