Rabat – Moroccan Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch arrived today in Nouakchott to represent King Mohammed VI at the inauguration of Mauritania’s re-elected President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who begins his second term in office.
Upon arriving at Nouakchott’s airport, Akhannouch was welcomed by Mauritania’s Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Bilal Messaoud and Morocco’s Ambassador to Mauritania, Hamid Chabar.
El Ghazouani recently secured a second term as Mauritania’s president, clinching 56.12% of the vote in the first round of the presidential election.
This clear victory placed El Ghazouani ahead of his nearest rival, anti-slavery activist Biram Dah Abeid, who received 22.10% of the vote. Hamadi Ould Sid’El Moctar, leader of the Tewassoul party, finished third with 12.78%.
The president’s re-election ensures his continued leadership of the vast desert nation, which has maintained relative stability amid the turmoil and violence affecting its Sahel neighbors.
El Ghazouani vowed to fast-track investments in energy and mining to boost Mauritania’s economy, a strategy that could strengthen his position as the leader of the nation.

Under Ghazouani’s presidency since 2019, Mauritania has avoided major attacks and enjoyed a period of relative peace. His administration, currently chairing the African Union, has been praised for managing security threats effectively.
During his first term, which was marked by challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the fallout from the Ukraine war, Ghazouani focused on supporting the disadvantaged and youth.
Earlier this year, Rachid Talbi El Alami, Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, unveiled the Morocco-Mauritania Parliamentary Forum designed to boost bilateral relations between the two nations.
Alternating between Rabat and Nouakchott, this annual forum will serve as a platform for addressing mutual concerns and fostering partnerships. The event will bring together leaders from various sectors, including politicians and business professionals.
