Rabat – A major fire broke out on Saturday evening at the Ben Abbad flea market in Kenitra’s El Maamoura district.
According to Moroccan media that cited authorities, once notified local officials, security forces, and civil protection services quickly arrived at the scene to start extinguishing the fire.
The intervention teams managed to contain the blaze, though efforts are still underway to fully extinguish the fire.
Initial reports suggest that the fire, which spread throughout the market, has damaged around 134 stalls.
Authorities have initiated an investigation, overseen by the relevant public prosecutor, to determine the causes and circumstances of the fire.

A judicial investigation, overseen by the relevant public prosecutor’s office, has been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
While urban fires pose a pressing concern, Morocco is also grappling with a rise in forest fire incidents. Additionally, the rise in summer temperatures and drought contribute to the spark-prone environment.
In July, the National Agency for Water and Forests released updated data identifying the regions most susceptible to wildfires.
This initiative includes new forecast maps designed to pinpoint high-risk areas and enhance national preparedness and prevention strategies.
In 2023, Morocco experienced 182 wildfires, which ravaged over 1,200 hectares of forest.
The Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region has been particularly affected, with 68 outbreaks burning 881 hectares, accounting for 70% of the country’s total forest fire damage.
