Doha – Two major Moroccan press federations have strongly condemned the offensive remarks made by Spanish journalist Francisco Carrión, who called Moroccan journalists “barking dogs” and “crazy” in a tweet.

Carrión, known for his alleged ties to Algerian intelligence services, made these comments after some Moroccan newspapers criticized the distortions in an interview he conducted with a Moroccan journalist who was detained in a criminal case.

The National Social Federation of the Press (FNSP) issued a statement denouncing Carrión’s “vile and unjustified attack” on Moroccan journalists.

The federation held the Spanish newspaper El Independiente fully responsible for this “cowardly targeting” and considered Carrión’s serious transgression as reflecting his low level.

The FNSP emphasized the integrity of the Moroccan press, noting that it is always at the forefront of defending national unity, the monarchy, and the person of the King.

Similarly, the Moroccan Confederation of Newspaper and Electronic Media Publishers expressed its strong condemnation of Carrión’s “offensive statements.”

In offensively describing Moroccan journalists as “dogs and deprived of reason,” the confederation argued, the Spanish journalist essentially confirmed long-standing suspicions that he is a “mercenary of the Algerian intelligence services.”

Carrión’s interview with Soulaimane Raissouni on his website “insulted the King and the Moroccan authority,” the confederation’s statement noted, describing the statements as “corrupt and criminal.”

Carrión’s remarks “reflect the extent of his hatred and hostility towards Morocco,” the statement stressed.

Both federations called for action against Carrión and El Independiente. The FNSP urged national press unions to file a complaint with international press bodies and the National Union of Journalists in Spain.

The confederation called on the National Press Council to file a complaint with the Spanish Federation of Journalists Associations (FAPE) and other international professional bodies.

In February, Mohamed Salah Tamek, the General Delegate for Penitentiary Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR), stated that the statements quoted by Carrión in a previous article mostly came from individuals and organizations known for serving agendas hostile to Morocco’s higher interests and territorial integrity.

Tamek recalled that Carrión, known for his hostility towards Morocco, seized the opportunity of the Spanish Prime Minister’s visit to publish blatant lies about the situation in Moroccan prisons.

The Moroccan press federations’ strong condemnation of Carrión’s offensive remarks reflects their commitment to defending the integrity and professionalism of Moroccan journalists in the face of what they perceive as a deliberate targeting of Morocco’s reputation by hostile foreign media.
