Rabat — Fatima Tamni, a member of the Democratic Left Federation delivered a strongly worded statement to Morocco’s House of Representatives, highlighting the alarming situation in Fnideq amid mass migration attempts.
The northern provinces have been severely impacted by a mass migration attempt involving both Moroccan and sub-Saharan youth and adults.
“On the night of Saturday, September 14, 2024, hundreds of young people and children attempted to head towards the occupied city of Ceuta in a bid for irregular migration, driven by despair over poverty, unemployment, and marginalization,” Tamni wrote in her message.
The MP further stressed that “the real starkly contacts with the vision of social equity” pledged by the Aziz Akhannouch government.
For the Tamni, the situation is driven by several challenges, including unemployment, and lack of sustainable job opportunities coupled with the high cost of living.
Tamni also questioned the effectiveness of the government public policies, noting that these measures “do not benefit citizens but are instead responsible for worsening conditions for large segments of Moroccans.”
The MP concluded her message asking the House of Representatives about the “immediate actions that will be taken” to rescue youth that turned to perilous migration paths.
Videos emerging online show hundreds of youth from Fnideq converging on routes leading to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta; despite heightened security measures aimed at managing the crisis.
As of now, there has been no official comment from government sources regarding these developments.
Moroccans, especially parents, have turned to social media to voice their frustration over the crisis, urgently calling on the government to find solutions to mitigate the situation.
