Rabat – The death toll from Saturday’s bus accident – in which extreme floods in the Tata region swept away the passenger vehicle – has reached five people.
New preliminary data details that 13 victims were rescued while 11 others remain missing. This is an update from the initial data, in which there were two identified deaths and 14 others missing.
Rescue teams are continuing to search for the other missing victims.
The incident last week involved a vehicle which was trapped on a bridge at the entrance of Tata.
The driver attempted to cross the submerged bridge, but the bus veered off course and was surrounded by water.
Local authorities in Tata reported the floods also caused partial and full collapse of many houses. The recent extreme weather has killed more than 11 in Tata alone, included in the total death toll of 18 across the regions affected by the floods.
Morocco’s weather office has issued several weather alerts recently, warning citizens of strong thunderstorms that have been hitting Tata, Ouarzazate, and Tinghir, among several other regions.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Interior warned citizens to stay away from any water sources to avoid threatening situations.
The ministry further advised citizens against crossing flooded areas and to adhere to instructions from public authorities to ensure their safety and that of others.
