Marrakech – The English Football Association, which had cited the mistreatment of sexual minorities to raise concerns about Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, has signaled that it has received assurances from its Saudi counterpart.
In a statement, the English FA said its board held talks with Saudi soccer officials last month to assess the Saudi bid.
“We asked them for a commitment that all supporters will be safe and welcome in Saudi Arabia in 2034, including LGBTQ+ supporters,” the statement read.
“They have assured us that they are fully committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all fans.”
FIFA officially announced Saudi Arabia as the 2034 host on Wednesday, highlighting the country’s growing prominence in global sport despite ongoing scrutiny of its human rights record.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had also addressed the concerns at the organization’s congress, emphasizing FIFA’s commitment to inclusivity.
“We are, of course, aware of the criticism and concerns and I have full confidence that our hosts will address all outstanding issues arising from this process and deliver a FIFA World Cup that lives up to expectations,” Infantino said.

The FA also expressed its belief that hosting World Cups can drive positive societal changes, stating that, “We also believe that hosting World Cups can be a catalyst for positive change, which is best delivered by working collaboratively in partnership with host nations.
For Saudi authorities, meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s confirmation as the host nation for the 2034 FIFA World Cup marked another significant moment in the kingdom’s growing involvement in global sports.
