Rabat — Morocco’s international football player Noussair Mazraoui has been playing in a wing-back role under Ruben Amorim’s new team lineup since his arrival, and Manchester Evening News has suggested that the coach has to put an end to this experiment.
It has been quite a significant change for the Red Devils as they get used to Amorim’s system after he replaced Erik Ten Hag last November.
Amorim sets a lineup with three centre-backs with two attacking wing-backs, and given their recent form, Manchester United players are bound to take time to adapt to the new tactics.
The manager has been experimenting with different players in the wing-back positions. He started his tenure by playing Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot in the flanks with Mazraoui on the right-side of the three centre-backs.
Since Amorim sees Diallo as a more attacking player, he switched his position to a right winger to be closer to the goal and now plays Mazraoui as a right wing-back, but there’s no doubt the Moroccan struggled against Newcastle on Monday night.
At the end of the game, Mazraoui received a 4/10 rating after both of Newcastle’s goals came from attacks down his side.
Unfortunately for Amorim, he doesn’t have many options other than to use Dalot and Mazraoui as his wing-back options at the moment.
United are yet to spend under the new manager and sign specialist wing-backs, and with Luke Shaw injured on the left-hand side, Amorim is left with little choice.

At the opening of the campaign, Mazraoui, who owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe “loves,”was arguably United’s best player and there was a strong case for him to have been their most effective signing from the summer transfer window, but regularly changing positions isn’t helping his cause at the moment.
In August 2024, Manchester United strengthened their defence by signing Mazraoui from Bayern Munich for a reported $ 18 million fee with potential add-ons.
Former manager ten Hag pushed for the deal to be closed which saw him reunite with the ex-Ajax player.
After joining the team, Mazraoui, expressed his excitement saying: “It’s an incredible feeling to be a Manchester United player, and I cannot wait to walk out at Old Trafford wearing the red shirt.”
