Rabat – Essaouira has welcomed a record of more than one million tourists in 2024, according to Ridouane Khan, President of the Regional Tourism Council (CRT) of the city.
He added that the “City of Winds” also set a new record of over three million overnight stays in classified accommodation establishments last year. He noted in a statement that this success was further boosted by the informal tourism sector, including vacation rentals provided by locals, which plays a significant role in Essaouira’s thriving tourism market.
The year 2024 witnessed exceptional growth in Essaouira’s tourism sector, with the city moving beyond seasonal tourism trends to become a year-round destination.
“Essaouira is now full of visitors throughout the year, including winter, summer, autumn, and spring,” the CRT president stated.
He attributed this progress to the efforts of local civil society, particularly the Essaouira Mogador Association. The organization has been instrumental in organizing numerous cultural and musical festivals, forums, and events to recognize the importance of culture, arts, and heritage in sustainable development.

Khan added that the city’s future in tourism looks promising, with several major projects underway. These include the development of the “City of Arts, Culture, and Heritage,” a cultural complex dedicated to the legacy of world-renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer. In addition, renovations and upgrades to the Mogador tourist resort have begun, supported by a significant investment of MAD 5 billion.
To maintain and build on this momentum, the CRT noted the need to improve Essaouira’s national and international connectivity by enhancing road, air, and rail links.
The historic coastal city is known for its charming blend of cultural, artistic, and natural attractions. The medina of Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city has a rich history of art and culture, particularly music. It hosts several festivals, including the annual Gnaoua World Music Festival, which attracts musicians and fans from around the world.
Essaouira is also a hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts thanks to its lovely beaches and strong winds.
