Doha – Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita met with Congolese President Denis Sassou-N’Guesso in Brazzaville on Wednesday, as both nations seek to strengthen bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
Denis Christel Sassou Nguesso, Congo’s Minister of International Cooperation, welcomed the high-level delegation, which also included Yassine Mansouri, Director General of Studies and Documentation (DGED), at Maya-Maya International Airport.
The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations, with officials addressing various areas of mutual interest and building upon the strong diplomatic foundation established between Rabat and Brazzaville.
“The Congo and Morocco have maintained excellent relations of friendship and cooperation for years, as evidenced by high-level visits reciprocally carried out by various authorities,” reported Congolese media.
The meeting comes at a strategic time, weeks before an upcoming African Union summit, and follows a series of diplomatic achievements between the two continental partners.
In August 2024, Morocco and Congo signed a memorandum of understanding in Rabat to enhance bilateral cooperation in environmental protection and sustainable development.
The relationship between the two countries has deepened substantially through state visits, including King Mohammed VI’s visits to Brazzaville in February 2006 and most notably in April 2018.
During his 2018 visit, the Moroccan monarch participated in the inaugural summit of heads of state and government of the Climate Commission and the Blue Fund for the Congo Basin.
This landmark visit also culminated in the signing of 14 cooperation agreements, covering strategic sectors including renewable energy, education, investments, and vocational training.
For his part, President Sassou-N’Guesso attended the COP22 in Marrakech in November 2016.
The Republic of Congo, as a steadfast ally, has also consistently supported Morocco’s territorial integrity, backing the Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara.
The two countries have expanded their partnership into critical infrastructure projects, including water desalination initiatives, as part of their commitment to address water security challenges.
This latest diplomatic engagement reinforces the existing partnership between Rabat and Brazzaville, particularly as both nations work to advance their environmental and sustainable development objectives within the broader context of African cooperation.
