Rabat – King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, inaugurated today the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex (CHU) in Rabat, a medical and academic facility developed by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health.

The monarch also instructed the immediate commissioning of the Mohammed VI CHU in Agadir.

Built on a 280,000 m² site, the Rabat complex integrates two major entities: the Mohammed VI International University Hospital (190,000 m²) and the Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences (90,000 m²).

The project represents a new generation of smart and sustainable hospital infrastructure designed to serve patients and students, providing latest care techniques while training future professionals according to international standards.

The hospital has an initial capacity of 600 beds, expandable to 1,000, and includes more than 30 medical and surgical specialties ranging from robotic surgery and neurosurgery to oncology, radiotherapy, and advanced medical imaging.

Among its 24 operating rooms, 19 are concentrated in a 3,400 m² integrated surgical block featuring hybrid and robotic theaters. The facility also includes 143 critical-care beds and 30 neonatal intensive-care incubators.

For the first time in Morocco and Africa, the hospital offers PET-MRI imaging technology coupled with PET-SCAN for highly precise diagnosis. It also features an MRI 3T Omega, Ethos Hypersight radiotherapy systems, a fully robotic hospital pharmacy, and a medical simulation center.

Technological innovation and sustainability

The Rabat hospital’s laboratory system is the first in Africa to be fully automated across all stages of chemical, immunological, and hematological testing. It also hosts Morocco’s only digitalized pathology laboratory, ensuring full traceability and precision in diagnosis.

Patients will benefit from integrated and personalized care pathways designed for comfort, safety, and efficiency. The facility houses specialized units such as a major burns treatment center and an advanced hyperbaric and hypobaric oxygen therapy department, unique in the country.

The adjoining Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences is expected to become a central hub for training and research. It comprises 15 lecture halls with 4,000 seats, 72 classrooms, and 217 practical workrooms, with capacity for 8,000 students.

The university encompasses faculties of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and veterinary medicine, as well as an engineering school focused on health sciences.

In line with environmental goals, the complex is certified “High Environmental Quality – Exceptional Level.” Equipped with 8,800 m² of photovoltaic panels, it meets over 10% of its energy needs and cuts carbon emissions by 40%.

Agadir’s university hospital

In Agadir, the Mohammed VI University Hospital will soon open its doors following the monarch’s directives. Built over 30 hectares with an investment of MAD 3.1 billion ($304 million), the facility offers 867 beds and will serve approximately 3 million citizens in the Souss-Massa region.

It includes specialized centers for maternal and child health, surgery, cardiology, and radiology, as well as a central operating unit with 19 rooms and additional theaters for emergencies and burn treatment.

The hospital is the first in Africa to feature the “Revo I” surgical robot, enabling high-precision, minimally invasive procedures with 3D visualization.

To ensure patient safety, the Agadir hospital integrates a fully automated sterilization unit and a robotic drug-distribution pharmacy, another first at the regional level.

Equipped with dual cardiac catheterization rooms and advanced imaging systems, it will significantly enhance access to specialized care, reducing the need for patients to travel to other cities.

Rabat and Agadir hospitals are expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs while advancing Morocco’s goal of equitable access to high-quality health care.

They also aim to strengthen the country’s medical education system and ensure the development of skilled professionals capable of meeting modern scientific and technological challenges.
