Rabat – The department of penitentiaries and reintegration (DGAPR) and the US embassy in Morocco signed, on Thursday in Rabat, an amendment to the cooperation agreement on penitentiaries’ reform concluded in April 2011 by the USA and Morocco, allocating an additional three million dollars to the initial funding.

Inked by delegate general of the DGAPR Mohammed Salah Tamek and US ambassador in Rabat Dwight L Bush, this amendment brings the total of funding earmarked for the DGAPR since 2011 to 7,136,000 US dollars, said a joint statement by the signatories.

This additional money will be used to cover activities as a program on the preparation for inmates’ reintegration after their release, support for the program on DGAPR infrastructure modernization, and other regional initiatives making the Moroccan body a platform for training.

The US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) is supervising this cooperation to perfect the management of Moroccan penitentiaries. The project is aimed at offering a healthy and secure environment that respects the rights and duties of inmates and prison staff, it said.
