Rabat – In a meeting held in Rabat on Tuesday, Alstom’s Group Managing Director, Henri Poupart-Lafarge, discussed Morocco’s pivotal role as a strategic industrial platform for rail transport.
He made his remarks during discussions with Mohamed Rabie Khlie, the managing director of Morocco’s railway company, ONCF, highlighting Alstom’s commitment to expanding its presence in the country.
Praising the established partnership with ONCF, Poupart-Lafarge expressed a desire to strengthen collaboration on new rail projects, which are essential for Morocco’s infrastructure development and economic growth.
He emphasized that supporting Morocco in enhancing its rail capabilities is vital for regional connectivity and sustainable development.
The meeting resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the acquisition of 12 TGV train sets, with an option for six additional units.
This acquisition is set to significantly bolster Morocco’s high-speed transportation offerings, showcasing Alstom’s commitment to quality and reliability in rail transport.
The project will also include logistical support and maintenance, ensuring that the new trainsets achieve optimal performance.
Khlie noted that Morocco’s rail network has undergone substantial advancements under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. He acknowledged the importance of modernizing infrastructure and rolling stock to meet the increasing mobility needs of the population.
Alstom’s proposal was recognized as the most competitive among various international contenders, reinforcing the long-standing partnership between ONCF and the French company.
This collaboration is seen as a crucial step toward sustainable rail development in Morocco. In addition to the TGV train sets, ONCF is pursuing further acquisitions, including intercity trains and metro units, as part of its broader strategy to enhance urban mobility and connectivity.
