Rabat – Around 35 people were initially victims of massive food poisoning on Wednesday evening in Casablanca after consuming a sandwich at a fast-food restaurant in the Sabata neighborhood.

However, the regional hospital of Ben M’sik told SNRTNews today that the victim count reached 63 by yesterday evening.

An alert was raised at the emergency room of Sidi Othmane Hospital in Ben M’Sik after 30 individuals exhibiting symptoms of food poisoning were admitted early Thursday morning, according to reports.

The victims had eaten a sandwich called “khobza aajiba” or “wonder bread,” which is a specialty of the fast-food restaurant.

This sandwich mainly consists of eggs, potatoes, rice, and other ingredients, which are often not fresh and can result in unsanitary and unhygienic conditions.

The hospital director told SNRTNews that the health of the affected individuals is stable with no severe cases reported.

The national health delegation added that most patients are stable, some have already been discharged from the regional hospital, a few remain under medical observation, and one case has been transferred to the university hospital (CHU).

A judicial investigation has been launched under the prosecutor’s supervision to examine the circumstances and details of the case.

Recently, Morocco has faced a surge in food poisoning cases, particularly during the summer months when heat compromises food quality and freshness.

In July, 26 people in Lahraouyine, a small town in the Casablanca-Settat region, were affected by food poisoning at what was believed to be a wedding celebration, where they reported consuming chicken pastilla.
