UN Peacebuilding Commission Elects Morocco as Vice-Chair for 2025

Rabat –  The UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) has elected Morocco as vice-chair, with Ambassador Omar Hilale representing the country at the UN in this role for 2025.

Morocco is bound to serve as Africa’s representative in this capacity for the entire year.

During the same meeting, PBC members confirmed Hilale as chair of the Central African Republic (CAR) Configuration for Peacebuilding.

His dedication to peace efforts in the CAR has earned him another term at the helm of the UN’s PBC.

This is the first time Morocco has secured the vice-chair position in this intergovernmental body, indicative of the country’s diplomatic influence in global peace efforts, specifically in Africa.

The PBC is composed of 31 members and brings together key stakeholders in order to generate support and develop strategies for post-conflict recovery.

The commission also works to ameliorate coordination within the UN system and to facilitate funding for reconstruction projects.

Morocco’s election as vice-chair for the UN body affirms its role in peace-building and security on multiple levels.

The renewal of Morocco’s leadership in the CAR Configuration shows trust in the country’s strong commitment to back initiatives that promote stability, local elections, and sustainable development.

Moreover, the UN’s decision to keep Morocco’s leadership in this area acknowledges the country’s valuable contributions to peacebuilding efforts in the Central African Republic.

In his acceptance speech, Hilal announced the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) is discussing plans for an official visit to Bangui.

The purpose of this mission is to secure resources for local elections in partnership with Central Asian authorities and international allies, with the sole aim of aligning national priorities with local realities.

Since 2014, Morocco has deployed more than 12,000 troops to the Central African Republic as part of the UN peacekeeping mission. It was the first country to contribute peacekeepers to CAR, stepping in even before the creation of MINUSCA.
