Early Elimination for Moroccan Judo: Moutii Knocked Out of Competition

In a blow to Moroccan judo, Achraf Moutii, the last remaining competitor, was eliminated today in his opening match against South Korean judoka Lee Joon-hwan.

Rabat – In a blow to Moroccan judo, Achraf Moutii, the last remaining competitor, was eliminated today in his opening match against South Korean judoka Lee Joon-hwan.

Moutii, competing in the -81kg category, faced a tough opponent in Lee Joon-hwan. The South Korean is currently ranked 3rd in the world and holds a bronze medal from the World Championships.

Lee defeated Moutii with a Waza-ari, a score indicating a near-ippon, ending the Moroccan’s hopes for advancement in the tournament.

Moutii’s early exit follows similar disappointing outcomes for other Moroccan judokas Soumiya Iraoui and Abderrahmane Boushita, who were also eliminated in their initial bouts.

Judo made its debut in the Summer Olympic Games at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, initially featuring only male competitors.

It wasn’t until the 1988 Summer Olympics that women’s judo was introduced as a demonstration sport intended to promote the sport rather than serve as a medal event.

Women’s judo officially became a medal event at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

In the 2024 Olympics boxing division, Moroccan boxer Widad Bertal secured her spot today in the quarterfinals of the women’s 54kg category.

She achieved this by winning her Round of 16 match against Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong with a score of 3-2.
