Rabat – Moroccan police and customs officers carried out a joint operation preventing an international drug smuggling attempt at the Guerguerat border crossing, south of Dakhla.
The operation led to the seizure of 183.2 kilograms of cocaine, SNRTNews quoted a security source as saying.Â
The report added that border control procedures and inspections, including the use of police sniffer dogs, helped uncover the drugs.Â
The cocaine was carefully hidden inside secret compartments in the metal frame of an international cargo truck with Moroccan license plates. The truck was arriving from a country in sub-Saharan Africa, and its 34-year-old driver was arrested. Â
Authorities have launched an investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor to uncover all details related to this case, including identifying everyone involved and tracking any international connections to the drug trafficking network. Â
This operation is part of ongoing efforts by Moroccan security services at the Guerguerat border crossing to combat international drug smuggling and other forms of cross-border crime.
El Guerguerat is a major transit point for drug trafficking between Morocco and other regions, particularly West Africa and Europe.Â
Its location at the southern tip of Morocco near the border with Mauritania makes it strategically positioned as a key trafficking route used by smugglers to move drugs – primarily hashish and other illicit substances.
