Rabat – The recently released 2024 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Indicator report paints a promising picture for Morocco’s progress in industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
Compiled by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the Bertelsmann Foundation, and released last week, the report identifies Morocco as a frontrunner in Africa when it comes to achieving SDG 9.
This specific SDG focuses on building robust infrastructure, promoting sustainable industrial practices, and fostering innovation. The report acknowledges “great strides” made by Morocco in these areas, suggesting a commitment to long-term economic growth and development.
However, achieving the full potential of SDG 9 requires a multi-pronged approach, as highlighted by a recent UN article. The article emphasizes the need for “coordinated efforts to strengthen an inclusive and sustainable industry.”
This could involve increased investments in research and development to drive innovation, prioritizing a swift and effective transition to environmentally friendly practices, and expanding access to information and communication technologies.
Implementing such a comprehensive strategy is crucial for Morocco to solidify its regional leadership in industry and innovation, while also contributing meaningfully to the overall SDG agenda.
While progress in this area is encouraging, the report acknowledges that Morocco faces challenges in achieving other critical goals, particularly those related to eradicating poverty and hunger.
The report attributes these challenges to a complex interplay of factors, including limited funding, ongoing geopolitical tensions, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
These issues pose significant roadblocks to achieving the 17 SDGs, which were established in 2015 as a blueprint for global sustainable development by 2030.
The UN’s annual SDG assessment offers a valuable tool for tracking progress across all 193 member states, delving into critical areas like access to education, healthcare, clean energy and biodiversity conservation.
