Ramadan 2025: Fasting to Begin in Iraq on March 1

Rabat – Iraq has officially confirmed March 1 as the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, following the announcement of the moon sighting authority.

The Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs in Kurdistan, Iraq, announces that tomorrow will be the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan.

The Basra Astronomical Center captured the image of the Ramadan crescent moon, confirming the start of the holy month.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, holds deep spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide. It is a time of fasting, prayer, and reflection, bringing communities together in devotion and generosity.

In Iraq, Ramadan traditions are intertwined with the country’s rich history, dating back to the ancient culture of Mesopotamia. While some customs have been preserved over generations, others have faded with societal changes, giving way to new traditions that adapt to modern life.

Despite rising prices in Iraqi markets, shoppers flock to bustling souks from the start of Ramadan to prepare for the holy month. Markets such as Al-Mansour Souk and Al-Shorja Souk, known for their vibrant sections including vegetable, spice, and sweets markets, remain at the heart of Ramadan shopping.

Iraqi cuisine and the spirit of sharing

Iraqi cuisine plays a central role during Ramadan, with dishes rooted in centuries-old culinary traditions. One of the most cherished aspects of iftar in Iraq is the communal sharing of food, where families and neighbors exchange portions of their meals, creating a diverse dining experience that strengthens social bonds.

Iftar tables in Iraq are often filled with a variety of slow-cooked dishes, grains, and meats. Lentil soup is a staple, served alongside other signature Iraqi dishes. Masgouf, Iraq’s famous grilled fish, is cooked slowly over an open fire and crisped on wood embers for a distinct smoky flavor.

Another beloved dish is Dolma – stuffed vegetables popular across the Arab world. A standout Ramadan specialty is Quzi (Ouzi), a slow-roasted lamb dish stuffed with spiced rice and garnished with nuts like pine nuts, almonds, and cashews. The dish requires nearly a full day of preparation, making it a centerpiece for special gatherings.

As Iraq welcomes the holy month, the country embraces its long-standing traditions of faith, family, and generosity, keeping the spirit of Ramadan alive through shared meals and cultural heritage.
