Marrakech – According to Spanish media reports, the Spanish government is relying on Morocco’s assistance to apprehend the perpetrator of an attack in the port of Barbate, Cádiz that resulted in the deaths of two Civil Guard agents in February.

Pedro Fernández, the government delegate in Andalusia, expressed confidence in Morocco’s collaboration to identify and bring the attacker to justice during a press event in Granada on Friday.

Fernández’s remarks come on the same day that the surviving agents provided additional testimony to the court investigating potential criminal liabilities within the chain of command.

He noted that efforts are ongoing in the strictly judicial sphere, with the investigation having included a request for cooperation from Morocco as a third country.

The deadly incident occurred when a narco-boat rammed into the agents’ vessel in the port.

The government delegate in Andalusia emphasized that the request for Moroccan assistance aligns with the current framework of collaboration and understanding between Spain and Morocco, including in judicial matters and the fight against terrorism and criminal organizations.

Reiterating his “absolute confidence” that Moroccan authorities will work with the Spanish judiciary and Civil Guard, Fernández expressed hope that the perpetrator of the attack, which he described as execrable and regrettable, will be identified and brought before Spanish courts.

The strengthened ties between the two countries are expected to aid in the resolution of this tragic case that claimed the lives of two Spanish law enforcement officers earlier this year.

The port of Barbate is located in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia, on Spain’s southern coast.

The region has been grappling with issues related to drug trafficking and organized crime, with the Spanish authorities working closely with their Moroccan counterparts to combat these challenges.
