Rabat – Police in Italy have arrested a 46-year-old Moroccan national living in Brescia on suspicion of training for activities linked to international terrorism.
The arrest followed an order from the prosecutor’s office in Perugia, according to a statement released on Thursday.
The investigation involved Perugia’s Cybersecurity Operations Center, Brescia’s anti-terrorism unit, and the Central Service of Postal and Communications Police.
Their inquiry, initiated in November 2023, suggested the suspect’s involvement in closed messaging groups tied to ISIS. These groups, accessible only by invitation, were used as platforms for radical content.
During searches, police found handwritten notes praising jihad. A forensic analysis of his phone uncovered evidence of propaganda materials and discussions related to extremist ideology.
Authorities also suspect that he looked into ways to manufacture homemade weapons through online sources.
Meanwhile, Moroccan authorities continue to strengthen security systems to counter extremist threats.
The North African country has dismantled numerous terrorist cells in recent years with the use of intelligence-sharing networks and cooperation with international partners.
The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), known for its proactive approach, plays a key role in identifying and preventing potential threats. Moroccan authorities remain focused on tackling radicalization at its roots, while also coupling security efforts with deradicalization programs.
