The death toll from a fatal food poisoning in one of the quick service eateries in M’hamid, Marrakech, has reached six victims as of today.

This follows earlier reports that food poisoning from a meat-based meal served at the fast food restaurant, known in Morocco as a “snack,” had sent several people to the hospital.

One of the victims was a woman who left the hospital last week but died on Sunday due to health complications, converging reports have indicated.

The number of people who were hospitalized is estimated at 26 people, including the six who have been declared to have died from the tragic food poisoning. The death toll tally includes a five-year-old girl, according to reports.

Also according to converging reports, police arrested the owner of the fast-food store immediately after news emerged of the unfortunate incident.

In a report, the newspaper Al Ahdath Al Maghribiya quoted several residents in the M’hamid area in Marrakech as insisting that this was not the first time that the fast-food store has been associated with instances of food poisoning.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the case while Marrakech local authorities are stepping up control inspections in fast-food stores.

In 2019, an investigative report by the website Sick Holiday and the food intolerance company YorkTest ranked Morocco’s Marrakech 7th out of the top worst places for food poisoning.

According to the ranking, Marrakech recorded 83 cases of reported food poisoning cases between 2017 and 2018.

Egypt’s Hurghada topped the infamous food poisoning list, followed by Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

“One of the more common holiday illnesses reported to Sickholiday.com in Morocco is Dysentery, a bacterial infection that can lead to severe diarrhea, stomach cramps and in rare cases can be life threatening,” said Sick Holiday.
