The Portuguese Football Federation is reportedly in talks with José Mourinho over taking charge of the national team, and a reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the 2026 World Cup could well be on the cards.

According to Turkish media, an initial agreement has been reached for Mourinho to succeed Roberto Martínez after the UEFA Nations League finals. This would be Mourinho’s first venture into international management.

The 61-year-old is currently in charge of Turkish side Fenerbahçe, but his time in Istanbul has been marked by off-field disputes and growing criticism. Mourinho remains a respected figure in Portugal despite recent challenges, and his experience managing elite clubs such as Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Manchester United is believed to appeal to the Federation.

A potential appointment would also bring him back into the same camp as Cristiano Ronaldo. The pair worked together at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, during which time Ronaldo scored 168 goals in 164 appearances under Mourinho.

While their relationship was often described as tense, it delivered significant success on the pitch.

Ronaldo, now 40, continues to feature for the national team and will top the squad list for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. A final campaign under Mourinho would reunite two of Portugal’s most prominent football figures in what could be the superstar’s final dance.

The Federation has not officially confirmed any changes. Roberto Martínez remains in post, having led Portugal to 20 wins in record time. However, reports suggest a decision on the managerial position will be made following the Nations League campaign.
