Rabat – US Vice President Kamala Harris has welcomed the adoption by the UN of a Morocco-American-introduced AI resolution, describing it as “historic.”

Proposed by the US, the resolution was sponsored by more than 120 UN member countries, Harris noted.

In a White House readout, the US Vice-President described the resolution as a “historic step toward establishing clear international norms for AI and for fostering safe, secure, and trustworthy AI systems,”

For the US Vice President, the resolution also establishes a “path forward on AI where every country can both seize the promise and manage the risks of AI.”

On Thursday, the UN adopted the first resolution on AI. The resolution was recently introduced to the UN General Assembly by Morocco and the US.

It seeks to bridge the artificial intelligence and other digital gaps that exist between and within nations as well as to promote safe, secure, and reliable artificial intelligence systems.

Harris emphasized the importance of shared responsibility to ensure that AI can be harnessed for sustainable development.

Stressing the need for a worldwide benefit from AI resources and expertise, she stressed that this opportunity also requires that all countries understand the need to protect the safety, privacy, and human rights of their citizens.

“The resolution makes clear that protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms must be central to the development and use of AI systems,” she concluded.

Also hailing the adoption of this resolution in a statement on Thursday,  the UN General Assembly notably acknowledged AI systems’ potential to accelerate and enable progress towards reaching the 17 sustainable development Goals.

The resolution “represents the first time the Assembly has adopted a resolution on regulating the emerging field,” said the UN body.
