Red Level Weather Alert Forecasts Heavy Thunderstorms, Snowfall in Several Moroccan Provinces

Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) has issued a new weather alert, forecasting strong thunderstorms and snowfall in several provinces across Morocco.

The new red-level weather notice forecasts strong wind gusts of 100 to 120 kilometers per hour, including local dust storms from 6 p.m. today until Friday at 11 p.m.

The weather will affect the provinces of M’diq-Fnideq, Al Hoceima, Chefchaouen, Fahs Anjra, Tetouan, Driouch, Taounate, and Taza.

Strong winds between  85 and 100 kilometers per hour are also expected during the same period in the provinces of Larache, Chichaoua, Moulay Yacoub, Meknes, Sefrou, Tinghir and Al Haouz. Additionally, they are predicted to occur in Guercif, Ouarzazate, El Hajeb, Ifrane, Fez, Ouezzane, Benslimane, and the Rabat-Sale and Skhirtate Temara provinces.

Khemisset will also witness the same weather conditions, while gusts of wind of 75 to 85 kilometers will hit the provinces of Kenitra, Settat, Rehamna, Mohammedia, Essaouira, Tangier and  Asilah, Safi. The provinces of Sidi Bennour  Youssoufia, Casablanca, Mediouna, Sidi Ifni, Tiznit, El Jadida, Sidi Slimane, Boulemane and Sici Kacem are also expecting this weather. 

These wind gusts will also affect the cities of Berrechid, Marrakech, Midelt, and Nouaceur.

Heavy thunderstorms between 90 to 110 millimeters are expected on Friday midnight and will continue until Saturday morning in the provinces of Tetouan, Ouezzane, Larache, and Chefchaouen.

Meanwhile, heavy thunderstorms of 60 to 90 millimeters will concern the provinces of Azilal Al Haouz, Tangier-Asilah, Midelt, Beni Mellal, Fahs Anjra, Taza, Taounate Al Hoceima, Ifrane, Guercif, Boulemane, and Seforu.

Rainfall between 30 and 60 millimeters will take place from Friday midnight until Saturday morning in Skhirat Temara, Chichaoua, Essaouira, Rabat, Sale, Safi, Khenifra, as well as Fquih Ben Saleh, M’diq-Fnideq, Kenitra and Benslimane, and Sidi Kacem.

Sidi Slimane, Meknes, Fez, Moulay Yacoub, El Hajeb, Khemisset, Mohammeda as well as Mediouna, Casablanca, Nouaceur, Berechid, El Jadida Agadir Youssoufia, Rehamna and Sidi Bennour are also concerned.

Snowfall will affect the provinces of Ifrane, Midelt, Tinghir, Azilal, and Belimellal, in addition to Boulemane, Al Haouz, Guercif, Sefrou and Taza from midnight on Friday until Saturday evening.

Today the National Motorway Company (ADM) issued a new press release, urging users of the entire national highway network to exercise caution from today through Saturday following the weather alert, predicting strong wind gusts with local dust storms and heavy thunderstorms.

ADM said that it “strongly recommends to users of the entire national highway network to exercise caution and to inquire about traffic conditions before anyjourney.”
