Rabat – The General Prosecutor’s Office in Casablanca has initiated an investigation following the spread of what it labeled as inaccurate information implicating national figures and institutions in an international drug trafficking case.

The investigation stemmed from claims made on social media, accusing individuals, including parliamentarians, local government officials, and law enforcement officers, of their involvement in a drug trafficking network that led to the arrest of 25 individuals in a case known as the “Desert Escobar” scandal.

According to a statement from the General Prosecutor’s Office, the decision to launch an investigation was prompted by the circulation of misleading content on various social platforms.

The statement said that the content falsely implicated public figures and national entities in connection with the international drug trafficking case.

The individuals brought before the prosecutor’s office are currently undergoing investigation, with some holding significant public positions.

Emphasizing the adherence to constitutional provisions regarding the right to access information, the General Prosecutor had previously disclosed preliminary findings of the investigation on December 24, 2023.

By doing so, the office aimed to clarify the number of individuals allegedly involved, who are now subject to ongoing inquiries led by the investigating judge.

The prosecutor’s office stressed that claims made by certain media and online sources regarding the involvement of personalities and institutions in the case are baseless and inaccurate.

Such allegations not only raise legal concerns but also pose a threat to the reputation of those wrongly accused, the statement added.

The General Prosecutor’s office has tasked the National Judicial Police Brigade (BNPJ) with identifying individuals responsible for creating and spreading the false information.

The “Desert Escobar” case involves the arrest of two influential members of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), who are reportedly facing charges related to drug trafficking, corruption, and forgery of official documents.

The PAM party has condemned attempts to tarnish its reputation amid the investigation.
