Rabat – Israel summoned today the ambassadors of Spain and Belgium over remarks made by the two countries’ Prime Ministers about Tel Aviv’s rejection of a complete ceasefire to end the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo and Spanish counterpart Pedro Sanchez celebrated the entry of the much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza, but emphasized the importance of a ceasefire.
The two officials also called on Israel to do more to protect civilians in Gaza and to respect international law.
“Israel has the right to defend itself. However, this right cannot encompass the deaths of innocent civilians, including thousands of children, in Gaza,” Sanchez said following his visit to Israel.
In response to Sanchez’s and de Croo’s remarks, which Israel said are “false claims,” Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen summoned the Belgian and Spanish ambassadors.
“We condemn the false claims of the Prime Ministers of Spain and Belgium who give support to terrorism,” Cohen claimed.
He also claimed that Israel is “acting according to international law,” describing Hamas as a ”terrorist organization” that is “worse” than ISIS.
Since the start of the Israeli aggression, Belgium and Spain have been renewing concerns about the devastating situation in Gaza, while calling on Israel to end its targeting of civilians.
Both countries also vowed to recognize the state of Palestine.
