Rabat – Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane opened its doors today to the IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Summit, taking place on November 16 and 17.

The event aims to unite women who are actively shaping the fields of engineering, technology, and science around the world, providing a platform for sharing knowledge, experiences, and innovative ideas, said the organizers in a press release.

Under the theme “Empowering Women in Technology: Fostering Innovation for Sustainable Impact and Entrepreneurship,” the summit highlights the influential role women can play in steering the future of engineering and technology.

The event promises attendees insights from renowned keynote speakers, engaging panel discussions, a stimulating Hackathon, and ample networking opportunities.

“This summit presents valuable chances to connect with peers, both women and men, who are engaged in STEM fields,” underlined the statement, adding that the event will foster a collaborative environment to exchange insights and acquire knowledge from experts.

With a focus on mentorship, networking, and collaboration, IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Summits have consistently made a substantial impact on communities worldwide, according to the statement.

Climate change student Hackathon

A notable feature of this year’s summit is the Hackathon, which is set to bring together ten competitive teams, each comprising three to four participants.

In a bid to foster diversity, each team is encouraged to include at least one IEEE student member, the organizers said.

The Hackathon, which will take place on the last day of the event, is dedicated to tackling pressing issues related to climate change in the Fes-Meknes region.

The challenges encompass a “worrisome transition” toward arid and potentially desert-like climates, putting immense strain on water resources. Extensive irrigation in the Middle Atlas exacerbated the situation, impacting local lakes, wildlife, and communities reliant on these water bodies.

The Hackathon aims to shed light on the disproportionate impact of these environmental challenges on women, particularly in rural settings. The increasing difficulty of tasks like water collection and agricultural duties emphasizes the urgent need for innovative solutions, noted the statement.

Participating teams will work on developing AI-driven technological approaches and Proof of Concepts (PoCs) with the goal of leveraging AI for holistic and sustainable problem-solving.

This includes using AI for modeling and predicting extreme weather events, optimizing the management of water resources, identifying areas most susceptible to forest fires, and crafting adaptive agricultural practices.
