Rabat – The African Development Bank (AfDB) said it will commit €782 million to support Morocco’s recovery following the devastating Al Haouz earthquake that hit the country in September.
The funds will help finance various projects in the country in 2023, the bank said in a statement yesterday.
AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina made the announcement at the opening of the Africa Investment Forum Market Days in Marrakech.
During the event, the statement added, Adeina “conveyed the solidarity of Africa Investment Forum partners for Morocco following the devastating earthquake that struck the country in early September.”
The AfDB President hailed Morocco’s resilience in the wake of the magnitude 6.8 earthquake. He pointed to Marrakech as the illustration of Moroccan resilience in the face of adversity, lauding the iconic city’s ability and readiness to host major events just weeks after the disastrous earthquake struck central Morocco.
“The people of Morocco are resilient. You just hosted the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings a few weeks ago right here in Marrakech. And here we are, you are hosting us for the Africa Investment Forum. What courage. What resilience. What tenacity,” he stressed.
Adesina reassured the Moroccan government of the pan-African bank’s “continued and collective support” for the recovery efforts.
The devastating earthquake claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people and injured thousands of others. In addition, it has caused massive destruction to dozens of villages across the Atlas Mountains.
The regions that sustained the most damage include the Al Haouz region, Chichaoua, and Taroudant.
