Rabat – Hundreds of residents displaced by severe flooding in Ksar El Kebir now find temporary refuge in Tangier, where authorities opened the National Summer Camp Center at the Diplomatic Forest to receive families forced to leave their homes.

Since Tuesday, the facility has hosted around 400 people evacuated from neighborhoods exposed to the rising waters of the Loukkos River.

The center, which can accommodate up to 600 residents, stands close to Mohammed VI University Hospital, a location that allows rapid access to medical services when needed.

On site, a coordinated effort brings together local authorities, security services, the Moroccan Red Crescent, and several support teams. Their joint work ensures order, safety, and basic comfort for families who left Ksar El Kebir under urgent conditions.

Structured shelter and daily assistance

Authorities arranged the center into two separate pavilions, one dedicated to women and children and another reserved for men. Each space includes bedding, sanitation facilities, and essential equipment designed to preserve privacy and dignity.

From the moment of arrival, families received meals, clothing, blankets, medicines, and immediate care when required. This support continued despite heavy rainfall that also affected Tangier, which added pressure to relief efforts.

A storage area inside the center allows teams to prepare and distribute supplies based on daily needs. Volunteers and staff adjust assistance according to family size, age, and health conditions.

Medical follow-up and emotional care

Health services operate directly within the center through a medical unit and an on-site pharmacy stocked with essential medicines. Medical teams pay close attention to residents with chronic illnesses and ensure regular follow-up.

Mohamed Ajbari, regional coordinator for emergency relief at the Moroccan Red Crescent in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, explained that the organization’s role fits within its mission to support public and health authorities during crisis situations.

He also pointed to the psychological strain faced by displaced families and noted that teams provide emotional support alongside medical care. Simple medical cases receive treatment on site, while complex situations transfer to nearby hospitals through coordination with health services.

A temporary haven amid uncertainty

Many residents expressed relief over the conditions provided at the center. Families described a sense of safety and care as they wait for weather conditions to stabilize and for authorities to assess when a return to Ksar El Kebir becomes possible.

The shelter operation reflects a broader solidarity-based response adopted by authorities to address the impact of this exceptional climate event and to reduce the hardship faced by affected communities.

Evacuation efforts from Ksar El Kebir continue, with residents directed toward safer locations outside the Loukkos basin, including Larache, Fnideq, and Tangier.
